First stop in for a chance to meet some of the great animals up for adoption at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. From 11am-2pm volunteers will have current shelter residents here for a visit. Johnson County Therapy Dogs will have a team here to showcase the potential of rescue dogs.
All day on the 29th will be Leash on Life customer appreciation day.We will have soft serve ice-cream for all to enjoy and who knows what else we will have for surprise sales. And in honor of our animal center friends we will also offer a free small bag of Holistic Select or Wellness food for any Animal Center pet for which you submit an application during June 29th through July 2nd.

The summer brings several parasite diseases to Iowa. Lyme disease is one that affects both humans and dogs. Carried by ticks, if your dog contracts Lyme disease he/she may show symptoms of lethargy, little interest in food, lameness and a fever. Lyme is a bacterial infection that your veterinarian can detect with a blood test and can effectively treat if caught early. If left untreated long-lasting arthritis may occur as well as chronic heart, neurologic or kidney problems. It is the tick bite that passes on the bacteria. Clearly prevention is the best way to protect your dog. Check their coat when you come inside, the sooner the tick is removed the better since the tick has to be feeding for 24 hours for the Lyme disease to be transmitted. It might be months after the bite before you see any symptoms in your dog. Talk to your veterinarian about the Lyme vaccine for your dog. It is very unlikely that your cat will contract Lyme disease, once again showing us what all cats know…cats rule, dogs drool!
Well, you can add ice and lime to the coconut for a refreshing summer drink or you can add Coco therapy to you or your dog’s diet to support skin and coat health among other benefits. Coconuts contain medium chain triglycerides (MCT), which aid in supporting overall health.
Oh No! It is two flashes from the past. Mr. Bill and Mr. Bubbles, both here to entertain you and your dogs. Mr. Bill repeats his classic phrase and Mr. Bubbles sounds like he is going down the drain from your childhood (or adult) bubble bath days. If you think these would be more fun on your desk at work you can
Art’s Fest in downtown Iowa City is coming June 8th and 9th. This is a great community event. We also have a great group of volunteers in the community that staff a ‘hydration station’ for dogs (and their people). If you have your dog with you to offer their opinion on new art items for your home, and you find they are in need of a drink or a place to cool off, stop in and say hello to these nice folks. Lots of dogs enjoy the social outing Art’s Fest offers, but please if it is a hot day consider leaving them home.
