Now through the end of the month you can enjoy a lovely meal at the Motley Cow, 160 North Linn Street, while also enjoying many of Laurie Haag’s pet photographs. While admiring all of the photos just think, your dog or cat could be next. Stop into the store to see more of Laurie’s work and set up an appointment for your four legged super star. Understanding the words sit and stay are helpful, but many ‘bouncy’ customers have had beautiful photographic success. www.lauriehaag.com
Microchips are a wonderful and safe way to identify your dog. Thanks to Midwest One and the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation you can get a chip placed for $5 on May 4th 9am-noon. Be sure to have proof of rabies and go to the bank on Keokuk Street. This is a great service and an added level of safety for your dog. Thanks to Midwest One for their third year of sponsoring this event. Chips are great for cats too, but please do not bring them to this event. You can stop by and purchase a voucher to have them microchipped at a later date.
Can’t get to Nepal? Then come to Leash on Life where we can show you our Himalayan dog chews. These are an all natural chew made of Yak and Cow milk with no artificial preservatives. The chew idea comes from a recipe used by Nepal locals to make a hard cheese snack that would last while working. Don’t be fooled into thinking these are soft, they are a very durable chew. We recommend any level of chewer to try these, even the hardest will enjoy these and it will take some time to get through them. Rosie is on evening number three with hers.
Oh, be still my beating heart—it’s that time of year again. Warm weather is finally here and there is no telling when we will see the first mosquito. They are not only pesky, those mosquitoes are a significant health threat to your dog. Prior to starting your dog on a prevention program, a heartworm check must be performed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will then prescribe a continuous (yearly) or seasonal (from thaw to frost) preventative program based on your dog’s needs. Not just for dogs anymore – heartworm preventative is also recommended for our cats.

The first true sign of summer is skunk smell, and yes, they are out and about! If your dog ends up with a perfumed scent you don’t like, we have a remedy. In an open container, mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 2 tsp liquid dish soap. Wash your dog while the mixture is foaming and then rinse (AVOIDING the eyes!). Hydrogen peroxide can bleach so consider what you are wearing. Your dog might also end up with a bit of a “peroxide” coat, but they should smell better. If you prefer we also carry commercial anti-skunk shampoos.
