Please join us in wishing one of the University of Iowa’s most recent BFA graduates congratulations. Rachel has worked with us at Leash on Life since we opened in 2006. She has completed her BFA studies and will be headed to graduate school in Milwaukee in August. She will be studying art therapy. As a self-described ‘cat person’ she has learned a lot about dogs. Rosie, Sadie and now Cooper love her. They will miss sharing lunch with her and we will miss her eye for detail on making the store and our products look great. Please stop in during July and wish her well and we hope to see her back with us when she has a break from studies.

A great example of Rachel’s eye and flare is our new Planet Dog display. I saw it and told her, ‘I am putting that in the newsletter’.We have a new supply of Planet dog toys. These quality, tough toys are made in the USA and the company puts a portion of their sales into their service dog Foundation. Planet Dog has a wonderful new dog toy, the Mazee. Treats go in the maze and you can see them as your dog works to get them out.
Good news for those feeding grain-free food. Wellness has expanded the Core® line with new flavors of dry and canned food for cats and dogs. CORE® grain free for small breed dogs features a smaller kibble size and lower calorie count, more appropriate for small breed dogs. For our feline pals, the new CORE® Indoor formula is lower in protein and 20% lower in fat.
Responding to feedback from customers, Wellness has formulated a grain free w/o fish. Cats and dogs can enjoy turkey and duck in either dry or canned form. We have all of these in stock and as always, your pet’s satisfaction is guaranteed. Stay tuned – July will bring the introduction of some grain free formulas of Holistic Select.
What on earth does that mean? It means that Darford, a Canadian dog food and treat company will donate to the animal rescue of your choice. On the back of the bag of their treats is a code that you enter into their web site, you pick the rescue or shelter of your choice and they send them a food donation. The Zero/G treats we are carrying are free of artificial colors, flavors and common allergens like wheat, corn and soy. Zero/G have buckwheat, peas, lentils & chickpeas, and are naturally fortified with vitamins, trace minerals, four probiotic cultures and a chicory root prebiotic. As a healthy treat, they are rich in high-antioxidants from blueberries, huckleberries, bilberries and rosehips.
Our yards would argue that we have not had enough summer thunderstorms this year. The thunder anxious dog has been quite grateful.
Fourth of July fireworks are just around the corner and at some point we will have thunder again. Here are a few options to help your dog and you get a good night’s sleep. Thundershirts™ provide a gentle, constant pressure which has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs. Eighty-five percent of dogs show significant improvement with their anxiety symptoms when wearing their Thundershirt™.Why does
Thundershirt’s™ gentle pressure work to calm a dog? Experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. Using pressure to relieve anxiety has been a common practice for years.
Many dogs have been helped with Dogswell® Mellow Mutts chicken strip chews.
The Chamomile and Lavender help achieve a more peaceful pooch. All of the Dogswell® and Catswell® products are free from antibiotics, hormones and by-products. Unrelated to thunder anxiety, we can report the chicken-apple and chicken-banana Dogswell® treats have been a BIG hit at our house.
Historically, flower essences have been used to balance and harmonize emotional, psychological and spiritual states. Botanical Animal has blended flower essences for animals. One of these formulas is call Panic Attack and may help to alleviate thunder and firework fears.
