Not only did we rank first place as your favorite pet store in eastern Iowa, but people said such nice things about our store. Don’t misunderstand us, we love the fact that we won, but we appreciate even more all the wonderful and warm comments you took the time to submit to the KCRG A-list contest. Thank you so very much! ~~ Julie & Laurie

For Sale

Natura Pet Products

We have learned that Natura Pet Products (maker of Cal.Natural, Evo and Innova) will be selling their business to P&G this month.

At this time P&G states they do not plan on any formula or production facility changes. They do plan wider marketing of the Natura line. As for the future source of the ingredients, there has been no comment.

The reason we have carried Natura products is the quality of their ingredients, recipes and facilities. We hope P&G maintains the same rigorously high standards as Natura.

If you feed a Natura product and are concerned that the sale of this quality, independently owned company will have its products compromised in the future, we can make recommendations of other holistic foods we carry which maintain human grade ingredients and their own processing facilities.

We take this development seriously and will keep you posted on what we learn.

Tick Prevention

Prevention is the best way to protect your dog

The summer brings several parasite diseases to Iowa. Lyme disease is one that affects both humans and dogs. Carried by ticks, if your dog contracts Lyme disease he/she may show symptoms of lethargy, little interest in food, lameness and a fever.

Lyme is a bacterial infection that your veterinarian can detect with a blood test and can effectively treat if caught early. If left untreated long-lasting arthritis may occur as well as chronic heart, neurologic or kidney problems.

It is the tick bite that passes on the bacteria. Clearly prevention is the best way to protect your dog. Check their coat when you come inside, the sooner the tick is removed the better since the tick has to be feeding for 24 hours for the Lyme disease to be transmitted.

It might be months after the bite before you see any symptoms in your dog. It is very unlikely that your cat will contract Lyme disease, once again showing us what all cats know…cats rule, dogs drool!

Little Stinkers

Little Stinkers

The first true sign of summer is skunk smell, and yes, they are out and about!

If your dog ends up with a perfumed scent you don’t like, we have a remedy. In an open container, mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 2 tsp liquid dish soap. Wash your dog while the mixture is foaming and then rinse (AVOIDING the eyes!).

Hydrogen peroxide can bleach so consider what you are wearing. Your dog might also end up with that “peroxide” blond coat, but they should smell better.

If you prefer we also carry commercial anti-skunk shampoos.
